6th Grade Advanced Math - Third Quarter

Students will:

  • Use properties to simplify expressions
  • Use the distributive property to compute multiplication problems mentally and to rewrite algebraic expressions
  • Solve equations by using mental math and the guess, check, and revise strategy
  • Solve and write addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations
  • Complete function tables for given function rules
  • Extend and describe sequences using algebraic expressions
  • Construct and analyze different verbal, tabular, graphical, and algebraic representations of functions
  • Solve inequalities by using mental math and the guess, check, and revise strategy
  • Write and graph inequalities
  • Solve one – step inequalities
  • Find the areas of parallelograms, trapezoids, and composite figures
  • Find the areas and missing dimensions of triangles
  • Determine how changes in dimensions affect perimeter and area
  • Draw polygons in the coordinate plane and use coordinates to find length
  • Find the volume of rectangular and triangular prisms
  • Find the surface area of rectangular and triangular prisms

Students will be able to answer the following Essential Questions

  • How is it helpful to write numbers in different ways?
  • How do you determine if two numbers or expressions are equal?
  • How are symbols, such as <, >, and =, useful?
  • How does measurement help you solve problems in everyday life?
  • How is shape important when measuring a figure?

6th Grade History-Second Quarter

During the second quarter 6th grade will be exploring Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. They will be learning about how these two civilizations were built as well as how they fell and everything in between!

6 Religion

During 2nd quarter 6th grade will continue with Unit 2 in Religion. We will look at the Eucharistic Celebration, the Commandments, our journey towards Heaven and then at how God invites us to His Kingdom.

We continue to reflect on topics from the Youth Catechism, Jesus Always, and numerous other resources to reinforce our knowledge and understanding of our faith.

For second quarter we will look at the following content:

Plate Tectonics

Earthquakes

Volcanoes

It is important to understand how they happen and what we can do to prepare ourselves to be safe.

6th September 01 2017 ELA

6th Grade ELA

Literature--During the first quarter, sixth grade will be completing a unit on poetry. We will study the elements of poetry and figurative language, and we will even be writing poems. 

Vocabulary--Units are completed independently over a 2 week span, with the last day of the second week being a test day. Parts of units are assigned in chunks, and students should be writing due dates for each section in their planners.

English--We will be focusing on capitalization and punctuation rules. We will be reviewing the Step-Up to Writing process while completing assignments and using what we have learned about punctuation and capitalization.

During the 1st quarter Earth Science will consist of the following topics:

Earth and its systems, interior, surface

Minerals and rocks, properties and classifying them, the rock cycle

Plate Tectonics, drifting continents, sea-floor spreading, theory of why the plates moved
